Between Gardens.

It's been a while since I last wrote a note here, and that quiet has been intentional. I've been in the middle of a real transition, closing the flower farm, moving house, and finding my way into a new, smaller garden of my own. I've come to call this in-between time Between Gardens, and it felt right to start sharing it with you here, beginning with where things stand right now.

Thursday the 21st of August. This is a very significant moment for me.

I'll be sowing sweet peas, larkspur, nigella and calendula into trays, and sowing the ‘classic mix’ of cornflowers directly into the ground. Before any of that though, there's the quieter work first, most of the gardens have weed mat and are filled with lots of small pebbles. I’ll be clearing all of thee from the garden beds, filling the space instead with compost and making the ground ready for little seedlings when the time is right.

These gardens around the house are all different from each other. Some sit in full shade, some in full sun, and others somewhere between the two, and I've chosen each flower with that in mind. It will definitely be a time of trial and error. I am also focusing on flowers for the pollinators who need the food, but also intentionally creating a beautiful space surrounding the house that enhances the character of the 1940’s bungalow we now live in. The flowers I've chosen are a mixture to suit different purposes, some for pollinators, just for beauty and some to harvest and dry and create with, others I'll be trialing later in the year for botanical dyes.

I'm really excited to bring colour back into these gardens and to bring new life into the ground around me.

I'm very grateful for the lessons I learned through flower farming. I learned how to sow particular seeds and how to get the best outcome from them, and I got to know each of these flowers and their varieties individually, their likes and dislikes and needs. I will carry that forward gratefully into this garden. But what I'm really looking forward to the most is growing flowers on a creative level, instead of one that was for business only.

Moving forward, I'll share here each month - what I'm growing, what's working and what isn't, and the botanical creative trials I'm playing with along the way. I'm excited to watch these gardens grow and change over the coming months.
